The best mobile detailer for you is one who is insured, brings their own water and power, tells you exactly what a package includes, and gives you a realistic time for the job. Price matters, but only after you know what you are paying for.
Mobile detailing is easy to start, so quality varies a lot. These are the things we would check before handing over the keys to anyone, including us. We use our own prices and times below because those are the numbers we can stand behind.
Start With Insurance
A detailer works on your paint with machine polishers and chemicals, often in your driveway. Mistakes are rare, but they can be expensive.
Ask whether the business is insured, and whether that coverage applies to customer vehicles. A clear yes is what you want. Foam Bros is fully insured. If a detailer hesitates or changes the subject, keep looking.
Ask What They Need From You
A true mobile setup needs very little from you. We carry a fresh water tank and a generator, so we can work without a hookup in a driveway, an apartment lot or an office parking area.
If a detailer needs to use your spigot and an outlet, that is not automatically a problem, but you should know before the appointment. It matters most if you live in an apartment, or if you want the work done at your office.
All you should need to provide is access to the car and enough room to work around it. For interior work, it helps to clear out personal items first.
Know What the Package Includes
"Full detail" means different things to different businesses. Compare the list of steps, not the name of the package. Here is what to look for at each level:
- Exterior: hand wash, wheels and tires, glass, and door jambs. A deeper exterior service adds clay bar decontamination and wax or sealant.
- Interior: vacuum, wipe-down, vents and console, and glass. A deeper interior service adds shampoo on fabric and floor mats, leather or vinyl conditioning, and deodorizing.
- Paint correction: machine polishing that removes swirls and light scratches. A wash and wax does not do this.
- Ceramic coating: a protective layer applied after the paint is prepared. It protects the finish, but it does not fix defects underneath it.
If a detailer can't tell you what is included, you won't know what you bought until the job is done.
Check That the Time Makes Sense
Time is one of the best ways to judge a quote, because good work can't be rushed. These are the times for our own services:
- Standard Detail: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
- Premium Detail: 4 to 5 hours
- Paint Enhancement: 2 to 3 hours
- 1-Step Paint Correction: 4 to 5 hours
- 2-Step Paint Correction: 6 to 8 hours
- Ceramic Paint Coating: 1 to 2 days
A big gap in either direction is worth a question. If someone promises a ceramic coating in an afternoon, ask how they prepare the paint first.
What You Should Expect to Pay
Prices depend on the size and condition of the vehicle, so most detailers quote a starting price. These are ours:
- Standard Detail: $139
- Premium Detail: $349
- Paint Enhancement: $395
- 1-Step Paint Correction: $595
- 2-Step Paint Correction: $895
- Ceramic Paint Coating: $599
Current prices for everything we offer are on our services page. When you compare quotes, confirm what is included and ask whether anything could raise the price on the day, such as heavy pet hair or stains. If your car needs more than the quoted work, you should hear that before the work starts.
Ask How They Handle Paint Correction and Coatings
These are the two services where skill matters most, so ask a few direct questions:
- Do you measure paint thickness first? Correction removes a small amount of clear coat, so a careful detailer checks before polishing.
- Will you tell me if a scratch can't be removed? Some scratches are too deep, and honest shops say so before they start.
- Which coating brand do you use? You should get a clear answer. We use Gtechniq ceramic coatings.
- How long will it last, and what does it depend on? Expect a range, not a promise. Our ceramic paint coating typically lasts 2 to 5 years, depending on how the car is driven and maintained.
- What do I need to do afterward? You should get clear aftercare steps. We ask customers to keep the car dry for 24 hours after coating.
Read Reviews for Details, Not Just Stars
A high rating is a good start, but the text tells you more. Look for reviews that mention the service, the kind of vehicle, and whether the detailer showed up on time and communicated well.
Recent reviews matter more than old ones. Look at how the business responds to a complaint too, because that shows you what will happen if something goes wrong on your car.
Confirm They Serve Your Area and Schedule
Monterey County is spread out, so a detailer based in one town may not cover yours. Ask before you plan around them, particularly if you are in Carmel Valley, Pebble Beach or farther down the valley.
Also ask what happens if it rains. Interior work can usually go ahead, but exterior work, paint correction and ceramic coating need dry conditions. A good detailer will contact you ahead of time to reschedule rather than rush the job.
Car owners in the Salinas Valley should also ask how the detailer deals with agricultural dust. Wiping it off dry can scratch the paint, so a proper wash process matters here.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
Keep this list handy when you call or text:
- Are you insured for work on customer vehicles?
- Do you bring your own water and power?
- What exactly is included in this package?
- How long will the job take?
- What could change the price?
- What do you need from me on the day?
- What happens if it rains?
- What do you do if I'm not happy with the result?
A good detailer will answer all of these easily.
